Deacons

Deacons

At Desert’s End, we believe Jesus is the true Servant King who came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). In following Him, we believe the church is to be led by qualified elders and served by godly deacons.

Service That Builds the Church

The New Testament describes deacons as spiritually mature members who assist the elders by meeting practical needs, protecting the unity of the church, and freeing the elders to devote themselves to the ministry of the Word and prayer (Acts 6:1–6; 1 Timothy 3:8–13). The word deacon comes from the Greek diakonos, meaning servant — and that’s exactly what deacons are: leading servants in the life of the church.

Deacons aren’t just volunteers or administrators. According to Scripture, they must meet specific character qualifications — they are to be dignified, honest, not greedy, faithful in their commitments, and grounded in sound doctrine. Their service is both spiritual and practical, often behind the scenes, but always essential to the health of the church.

Reflecting the Heart of Christ

We see the role of deacons as deeply honoring. They reflect the servant heart of Christ in tangible ways — caring for people, stewarding resources, coordinating ministries, and helping ensure the church functions with order, grace, and compassion. Deacons at Desert’s End serve in various areas such as hospitality, benevolence, facilities, finance, and operations. They don’t lead the church in doctrine or direction — that is the role of elders — but they do lead the way in sacrificial service, humility, and faithfulness.

“Deacons are not the spiritual junior varsity. Their service, while different from that of elders, is no less essential to the mission of the church.” – Alexander Strauch

We are thankful for the members who joyfully carry the towel and basin and serve the body of Christ for the glory of God.
